Post-Event Report: Port Alfred Easter Festival Fun Cycle presented by Cycle Asylum

The Port Alfred Easter Festival Fun Cycle was a resounding success, underscoring the community’s passion for outdoor activities and the potential for future growth in this domain.

The Port Alfred Easter Festival included an exciting new event this year, the Fun Cycle, which took place with great enthusiasm and community spirit. The Fun Cycle was part of a ‘soft’ Triathlon and offered riders a delightful route around the scenic streets and pathways of Southdowns and Westside in Port Alfred.

Distance Options and Riding Type

Participants had the option to choose a 10km route, with a shortcut available for children or those looking for an easier ride. The course mainly followed streets and pathways, with a mix of road and gravel terrain. While mostly smooth, riders encountered a few tricky sections with loose gravel and the occasional pothole.

Participation and Goodie Bags

A total of 39 enthusiastic individuals participated in the Fun Cycle, demonstrating the community’s keen interest in such events. Two participants rode E-bikes and secured the top spots in both the men’s and women’s categories. Although no official categories were designated, each participant received a goodie bag courtesy of Round Table Port Alfred, generously contributed to by local businesses such as Buco, 1826, Cycle Asylum, Herotel, and HBCS.

Category Winners and Conditions on the Day

Without formal categories, special recognition was given to the first male and female participants to cross the finish line, who received prizes sponsored by Edge Finance. This gesture was appreciated by all involved. The event benefited from favourable conditions, with St Andrews providing valuable support in terms of facilities and logistics.

Event Atmosphere and Community Importance

The atmosphere during the event was lively, with participants seeking both fun and a sense of challenge. While some riders embraced a competitive spirit, others enjoyed cycling through their community. Despite a few navigational hiccups and challenges faced by younger participants, the overwhelming sentiment was one of satisfaction and joy, evident from the smiles on everyone’s faces upon their return.

Events like the Fun Cycle are essential to the Port Alfred community, offering residents and visitors an opportunity to explore and appreciate the beauty of their surroundings. Looking ahead, there is a shared desire to see such events become more frequent and better organized, potentially leading to the establishment of regular cycling activities like ‘Cycle in the Park’ held bi-monthly.

Future Plans and Collaborations

Round Table Port Alfred, in collaboration with The Cycle Asylum, played instrumental roles in organizing the Fun Cycle and laying the groundwork for potential future similar events. Plans are already underway to elevate the ‘soft’ Triathlon to a more challenging level, with careful consideration for seamless transitions between events. Such aspirations hinge on securing necessary funding and garnering support from local authorities, particularly in addressing infrastructure needs such as river walls and pathways.

With collaborative efforts and continued support, the vision of a vibrant cycling culture in Port Alfred can undoubtedly be realized, enriching the lives of residents and visitors alike.
