Royal St Andrews Hotel SA Open Champs presented by Rip Curl – The Opening Function

Port Alfred – The opening function for the Royal St Andrews Hotel SA Open Champs, presented by Rip Curl, was a fun affair at the Royal St Andrews Hotel. Surfing South Africa Vice Prez Anne Wright was the impromptu MC, warmly welcoming everyone to the event.

Team Speeches

Then, it was the chance for the district team managers to stand up, introduce their teams, and say a few words about their teams, the vibe, and the spirit. Some of these speeches were excellent, and some were less than excellent. Still, they all revealed a cool little human side to all the competitors.

The function of opening functions is to allow old friends to meet up all over the country before the fierceness of competition takes over. It allows them to chat about event formats, to have a laugh and libations, and to meet a few new people. It is also a chance for an event sponsor to say a few words about the event and why they support it.

60th Anniversary

The owner of the Royal St Andrews Hotel, Justin Bekker, welcomed everyone. He expressed pride in being entrusted with this event, which is celebrating its 60th anniversary. Finally, he wished all competitors the best of luck.

Then it was time for the Kowie Surf Club chair, Mickey Witthuhn. He spoke on behalf of the club, thanked everyone involved in setting up this contest. Also, for coming to his hometown, and wished everyone luck in the tournament.

Three Events

The SA Open Champs is the first of three concurrent events running in Port Alfred. The Rip Curl GromSearch is the 2nd contest. The Rip Curl Cup is the final contest.. The Royal St Andrews Hotel presents both events, supported by Sea Harvest.

All three Surfing South Africa events are anchor events of the Port Alfred Easter Festival. This is the multi-sports, music and culture festival that takes place annually in Port Alfred.
