East Beach, Port Alfred – It was exciting surfing on day two of The Rip Curl GromSearch presented by Royal St Andrews Hotel and supported by Sea Harvest at East Beach, Port Alfred. Watch the day’s surfing here – Morning and Afternoon.
Granny Grommets
The morning session was joined by the Kowie Granny Grommets, who came down for their bodyboarding session at East Beach. Furthermore, they were joined by Jack Parow, who had performed the previous night at Bands Innie Bush.
“That was a good jol last night,” said Parow. “The vibe was lekker, the people were lekker, and the crowd wanted to party. Also, I always enjoy coming to Port Alfred. I had a cool bodyboarding session with the grannies as well. Everyone said the water was cold, but it was fine. I’m used to colder water than this.”
The conditions were good, but a bit inconsistent, with one heat blessed with waves and the next with few waves to ride. Also, the onshore made it a bit tricky, but there were still some exciting surfing and very good rides and some excellent scores. The top scores of the U16 Boys were Ben Esterhuyse, Loghann Tilsley, and Nate Tayler. In the U18 Girls, Maxine Kauffman and Leah Lepront were top scorers.
Top Score Of The Day
One of the best heats of the day was the U18 Boys Quarterfinal Heat 2. Kai Hall started with a decent 5.67 ride. This was followed by an incredible 9.77 ride for two excellent forehand hits in the critical part of the wave. Further, this was the highest-scoring wave of the day and the contest so far. Kieren Murphy was right behind him and managed to sneak into second. Nathan Tayler, with an excellent 8.33 ride on the scoreboard, couldn’t find a backup screen and was eliminated along with Josh Jefferis.
