Kowie Granny Grommets at the Port Alfred Easter Festival

For the first year, the Kowie Granny Grommet Gang joined the proceedings at the surf events down at East Beach. They were in the mix during the Rip Curl GromSearch on the Saturday down at East Beach.

NSRI Assistance

There was a massive turnout, with about 80 grannies arriving and NSRI on the ground and assisting and advising when necessary. The location for the Granny Grommet session was just a hundred metres east of the East Pier to stay away from the rips and to keep clear of where the surfers were finishing their rides.

Jack Parow

Another great addition to the Granny Grommets session was when the main ou, Jack Parow, came down to join them, get some waves, and cool off in the chilly water.

Parow had performed the night before on the first day of the Bands Innie Bush Festival up at Rosehill. “That was a jol!” said Parow. “The vibe was so good. I love this place. I want to return next year and hang out with the community in Port Alfred. And the water isn’t cold; I’m from Cape Town.”

The waves were great for the grannies – relatively small and consistent, and enough for all 80-odd grans to get their fair share of waves and get nice and cooled down.

After their session, many of the Kowie Granny Grommet Gang grommets came to the contest scene to watch the real Groms at the Rip Cutl GromSearh and to hang out with the young surfers and their friends and families and enjoy coffee or tea from the kiosk.
