Fishing Heritage on the Kowie
Fishing has always formed part of the rhythm of life along the Eastern Cape coast. Long before organised competitions existed, anglers stood along rocky points and sandy beaches, testing their skill against the ocean. That tradition continues during the Port Alfred Easter Festival through the Species Spectacular Fishing Tournament hosted by the Port Alfred River & Ski-Boat Club.
A Tournament of Knowledge
Successful competitors know that fishing the Kowie coastline requires patience, local knowledge and an understanding of changing conditions. Tides shift, currents move, and different species appear depending on water temperature and time of day. Therefore, experienced anglers constantly adapt their approach.
Some move between beaches and river mouths. Others experiment with bait combinations or change casting positions as the conditions evolve. Because of this tactical element, the Species Spectacular attracts both seasoned anglers and enthusiastic newcomers who enjoy the puzzle of working out what the ocean might deliver next.
