Surfers are scored on their two best rides in a heat, and choosing waves that allow multiple manoeuvres often leads to higher scores.
Consequently, competitors spend a lot of time studying the lineup before their heat begins. They watch where waves break best and position themselves carefully in the water.
Safety and Fair Play in the Lineup
Although performance remains the focus, safety rules also play an important role during surf contests.
At events like the Port Alfred Easter Festival, NSRI rescue craft operate nearby to ensure that competitors remain safe in the water.
Importantly, there is a clear rule regarding assistance. If a surfer signals for help and physically reaches out to an NSRI vessel, they are immediately withdrawn from the heat and recorded as out of the contest.
