He is one of the biggest supporters and co-sponsors of several events at the Port Alfred Easter Festival. We decided to find out more about Ed; he has a pretty cool story.
What is it you do in PA?
I was born and bred in PE, but my family has had a Port Alfred holiday home since 1978. Ten years ago, I purchased the plot next door to my Dad’s house and built it. Until 2018, I primarily worked in PE, where my company, Edge, is based. Edge is an independent & holistic financial services company that provides a wide range of long-term and short-term insurance and investment solutions. I am now a full-time Kowie local and have opened an office here. We shall be expanding our footprint during 2024.
My family is also involved with Coca-Cola and Woodlands Dairy.
What is your total involvement in the festival?
From an organisational perspective, Lauren Meyer and I represent the Sunshine Coast Tourism Marketing and Media Committee and are involved in assisting Justin Bekker wherever possible. Personally, I am sponsoring/organising the cycling, swimming and tennis components as these are 3 of my favourite sports – I also love bodyboarding but feel that competing in 3 sports should be sufficient!
What is the best part of your job?
Strangely, I love dealing with people and numbers! Being a financial advisor and investment manager (I have my fund management license) enables me to do both!
What is the most challenging part of your job?
National politics – our country would be so far better off economically and employment-wise, and from an investment sentiment, if our government could stop scoring so many of its own goals. It destroys investment confidence and makes critical skilled employees and taxpayers leave.
What do you do to unwind when things get stressful?
Easy – Bodyboard, swim, ride, play tennis, and drink a beer after any of them!
What is your favourite place to be in Port Alfred?
The beach, as well as the Royal St Andrews Hotel!
What does a good evening in Port Alfred consist of for you?
A good braai with my girlfriend and fur-children at home or an ice-cold beer watching the waves at sunset!
What are your feelings about the Port Alfred Easter Festival?
I am very excited, hence my willingness to assist and support as much as possible! I firmly believe that Royal St Andrews Hotel and Rip Curl should be commended for their efforts – now let’s hope the locals support! We cannot just expect that out-of-towners will be there – we need a groundswell of local support at all activities to ensure event success.
Where do you see the Port Alfred Easter Festival going in three years?
To infinity and beyond!
